Evolut Benefits From Visionpro Technology

Evolut uses its Hawk vision-guided robot system - based on Cognex's Visionpro technology - for vision jobs, such as for a robot arm that recognises, picks and positions an item on an assembly line. When using Cognex image-acquisition cards, the installation can manage up to 10 cameras and reduce the time of image acquisition. The system also relies on Patmex, Cognex's software for recognition and localisation of parts. Thanks to Patmex, Hawk can identify and find a diverse range of objects.

The robot receives the data in order and can follow the handling of pieces no matter how they are oriented. Approximately 50 per cent of their installations benefit from this technology, which offers a range of advantages. The camera acquires the image, position and orientation of the part or object and communicates this to the robot, which can then pick it up. In a typical application for Evolut, the robot relies on Visionpro and Patmex to obtain enough precise information on the position of a piece so that any surplus material - on a joint for example - can be located, exactly measured and removed.

The system has many advantages. Patmex: removes the need for a piece-orientation device; reduces set-up times; deals with different pieces in the same phase of production; features a 98 per cent reliable rate of recognition; and increases productivity rates. It is an open architecture guided robot with personalised algorithms for individual applications. It can handle varied lighting conditions. Because of its ability to adapt to the specific production environment, Patmex can simplify the planning and construction of a robotic station.

For example, since the system can easily measure the objects no matter how they are placed, costly mechanical feeders or pallet systems are no longer necessary. The positioning of optical machinery and video cameras is simplified by Patmex too because Patmex can adapt itself to the varying orientation, dimension or aspects of its environment. Patmex also removes the need to re-programme or adjust the original setup if the system is moved to another part of the production line.
